Crew Profile: Paulo Joaquim

In this Crew Profile, we are throwing the spotlight on Paulo Joaquim, arguably TOURtech’s best self-taught Network Engineer and Crew Chief.

The Beginning. Like many of our contractors, Paulo’s early start in the production industry began with audio.  He studied audio engineering at the University of Hartford and also completed a show production degree at Fullsail University. Paulo went on to work in the touring industry with tours such as Rage Against the Machine, Kid Rock, The Jonas Brothers, Rock The Bells, and Paul McCartney, to name a few.

It was on The Eagles Tour that Paulo made his first TOURtech connection, traveling and working with Simon Knudsen.  The tour wanted internet at front of house, and Paulo helped Simon to make this possible by using what’s called “powerline networking.” Powerline networking utilizes a power circuit by way of adapters modulating the sine wave of the power cable to get the data across. Together they had come up with this solution that made everyone happy, and so Simon learned that Paulo did not only have a good grasp of networking knowledge, but also an aptitude for working with a production crew regarding this service.

TOURtech Connection.  Paulo Joaquim lived much of his life all over the world, as his father had a job that required his family to move around. He has lived in the Middle East, Portugal, South America, Connecticut, Florida, Colorado, Pennsylvania and his home country, South Africa.  In 2010, Paulo decided to move back to South Africa to be near his family, which was perfect timing.  TOURtech was tapped for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and we had someone local to do the job!

Year after year, Paulo continues to travel to the United States and other parts of the world, working for TOURtech each season on some of the biggest and best events we support:  Made In America, iHeartRadio Music Festival, Chicago Marathon, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Desert Trip, just to name a few!

What We Didn’t Know.  Paulo used to play the saxophone (he still has it, but isn’t sure why), and in high school he also played bass guitar in a rock/metal band called Heathen.  In case you’re wondering, YES, there was a Heathen album, but good luck finding a copy, and don’t bother searching for videos on YouTube.  We already tried that and the search turned up nothing.

Special Congratulations.  Paulo – Congratulations on your recent marriage to the love of your life, your beautiful WIFE, Jeanne!
