In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, many communities in the Carolinas have been devastated by flooding due to the heavy rainfall the storm produced when it made landfall in September.
One of those communities was Surf City, NC, who’s town hall suffered major flood damage during the storm, which, according to WECT News 6, prompted officials to condemn the building. Most of the IT infrastructure in the building was also damaged by the water.
The town hall has since been moved to a new location, but after the move, they were in need if equipment and assistance to get everything back online, so the Information Technology Disaster Resource Center stepped in to help.
The ITDRC provides communities around the country with the technical resources necessary to continue operations and begin recovery after a disaster. TOURtech is proud to be one of their trusted partners, and we were more than happy to donate a surplus of voice, network, and wireless equipment from our inventory to aid in the Surf City recovery efforts.
In the latest Situation Report from the ITDRC, volunteers continue to provide technical assistance in the town of Surf City with the installation of a microwave link between the temporary town hall and public works office, plus a VoIP rollout. Joe Hillis, Operations Director for the ITDRC, said “they continue to struggle with POTS phone/connectivity issues, so we’re helping them implement a city-wide VoIP solution until they can figure out their long-term recovery strategy.”
The ITDRC currently has many other teams deployed in North and South Carolina, and they are also closely monitoring Hurricane Michael, which is on track to dump more heavy rain in the Carolinas later this week after making landfall in the Florida panhandle.
